The Back-Up Battery Unit is manufactured in South Africa by SKUNK Alarms

About the battery backup unit

The battery back-up system has been designed to supply power for home and small business. The unit can power appliances such as TV, DSTV, DVD, fish tank, lights, alarm system, garage door motor, gate motors etc. “when the power deserts you, Eishkom.”

For business use such as CCTV, tills, credit card machine, lighting, computers, etc.

The system takes 12v or 24v depending on the unit and converts it into 220v. The unit detects the power failure and automatically switches the battery back-up on to supply 220v to essential equipment.

When the power is restored the unit automatically switches off and the house mains supply runs normally. The batteries are charged once the mains power is returned and cannot be overcharged. Once fully charged, a trickle charge will keep the batteries topped up until the next power failure.

Units available

  1. 300w / 500va
  2. 600w / 1000va
  3. 800w / 1330va
  4. 1200w / 2000va

Extra batteries in their own housing are also available, giving longer run times to your equipment.

Passive (motion sensor) activated lighting

A: Battery back up installation

Note this installation is connected directly to the battery back up unit.

This option is installed in conjunction with the battery back up unit. Independent energy saving low wattage lights are installed into areas that are most commonly used, such as kitchens, passages, bedrooms and also as outdoor security lights. These lights will only work when the power supply is off and the battery back up unit is operating. Passive activated light units can also be added to this installation thus giving more standby time with the lights not permanently on. Motion sensor passives are installed in conjunction with the existing home/business lighting installation, and will activate the lights once movement has been detected in that area. Once the passive does not detect movement, it will automatically switch off the light covering that area.

Areas like the lounge that are used constantly require permanent lighting. The lounge should rather be fitted with an energy saving lamp that can be manually switched on and off if required.

B: Permanent installation

This option will save you money and is a good security measure. Once all have gone to sleep the unit can be left on and would switch on the lights to an unsuspecting intruder taking his advantage away.

Motion sensor passives are installed in conjunction with the existing home/business lighting installation, and will activate the lights once movement has been detected in that area. Once the passive does not detect movement, it will automatically switch off the light covering that area. This type of installation will save money on your monthly electricity account under normal operating circumstances.

To control this function in a permanent installation just switch off that light switch for that room and the passive will automatically switch off, keeping the light off. Switching the light switch on will activate the passive setting the motion sensor on.

Pet friendly passives can be installed.

Installation

An installation can be done by one of our qualified installers. From the battery back up unit to the passive activated energy saving light units and outdoor security lighting. For more information on outdoor security lighting go to: www.skunkalarms.co.za

What the unit can be used for

TV’s, DSTV, video machines, DVD’s, lighting, fish tank’s, security systems, garage door openers, gate motors, outdoor, camping etc.

What can’t be connected to the unit

All high power consumption appliances such as:

Stoves, geysers, washing machines, tumble driers, kettles, toasters, digital clocks, fluorescent lights, power tools, laser printers, photocopiers etc. If an appliance overloads the unit it will switch off, and the overload LED will activate.

An idea of what your power consumption needs are in watts

(All are approximate power consumption indicators)

TV 74cm, DSTV, DVD, energy saving lamps x 2      120w + 20w + 35w + 28w = 203w
Fish tank (air pump, water pump and heater) 20w + 30w +200w = 250w

All battery times indicated are approximate and are dependent on the load drawn.

Unit protection

All the units have a circuit breaker, are fused, protected against high voltage surges and are earthed. A strong ventilated steel casing protects the unit and makes it durable. Two handles are attached to the top of the unit for ease of transporting.

Battery back-up units are an effective alternative to generators, they are silent, require no diesel or petrol, no ongoing costs, no servicing, no fumes. They are much more environmentally friendly and have automatic switch over when a power failure occurs with automatic charging of batteries once the power is reinstated.

Power surges

The unit protects the equipment it is powering by preventing a power surge once the power is reinstated, by only switching over to mains supply a few seconds later once the mains supply has settled down.

Maintenance

The complete unit is totally maintenance free.

Standby times (approximate)

Time verses wattage drawn. These are conservative maximum times.

Watts 300w (one battery) 600w (one battery) 800w (one battery) 1200w (two batteries)
  Hours Hours Hours Hours
100w 8:00 8 8:00 14:30
200w 3:30 3:30 3:30 7:45
300w 1:50 1:50 1:50 5
400w   1 1 3:30
500w   0:50 0:50 2:30
600w   0:35 0:35 2
700w     0.3 1:20
800w     0.25 1
900w       0:50
1000w       0:45
1100w       0:40
1200w       0:35

Preferably buy a two battery pack unit for the 300w and 600w unit and four to eight battery packs for the 800w and 1200w units which will double the stand by time and protect the batteries from being discharged too deeply and too often on single battery packs, greatly extending the life of the batteries.

  • Work out how many watts you need and select the right unit to run your system with power to spare.
  • It is not a good idea to run the unit at full capacity, rather upgrade to a larger wattage output unit.
  • Standby times from different amp/h batteries will differ.
  • Do not exceed the wattage output with appliances that need a greater wattage than what the unit can supply.

Warning and safety

Danger 220 volts, high voltage can cause serious shock, injury or death.

  • Do not open the battery back up unit. If the unit becomes faulty return to the place of purchase for repair.
  • Only qualified personnel may undertake repairs on the unit.
  • If the unit is opened by an unauthorised person, the warranty will become null and void.
  • Do not tilt the unit.
  • The unit must always remain upright.
  • Do not place the unit in direct sun light.
  • Avoid covering the ventilation slots. (the unit may overheat).
  • Never use the unit near flammable materials.
  • Keep heating appliances away from the unit.

Warning indicators

Audio indicators

The unit monitors the battery condition constantly. If the battery starts to run low the unit will beep intermittently. Once the battery cannot meet the needs of the power output, the unit automatically shuts down.

When the power returns the battery will automatically start to recharge until full. (The more batteries the unit has, the longer the running time will be.

The fewer non essential appliances connected will also increase battery time)

LED indicators

There are five indicator LED’s, when on:

Power That the mains power supply is on
Charging The unit is charging the battery
Inverter Power has failed and the inverter is supplying power
Overload Too many appliances are connected to the unit
Low Battery power running low

Batteries used

All batteries used are deep cycle batteries made for this type of charge and discharge unlike the typical car battery.

*The more batteries the unit has, the longer the operating time to your equipment.

Charging the batteries

  • The unit has an automatic intelligent charger that cannot overcharge the battery.
  • The greater the charge, the quicker the battery is charged, shortening the life the battery. The unit charges at a slower rate lengthening the life of the battery.
  • The unit will start to beep as the battery level drops to its minimum voltage level and will automatically cut out once that minimum level is achieved.
  • Once the mains power has returned the battery charges at maximum charge and decreases the charge rate as the battery reaches full. At this point the charger starts to trickle charge to maintain the fully charged status.
  • Recharge time for a single battery from flat to fully charged is approximately ?????? hours

Battery lifespan

The lifespan on a deep cycle battery is approximately four years, although the more often the battery is cycled the shorter the life span will be.
